All the Yoga Myths We Busted in 2020

When I look back on this year, I almost can't believe how much high-quality content was released through my website & social media channels!

Much of this content came in the form of yoga myth-busting, and some of the most interesting posts came from amazing special guests I specifically invited to contribute to my blog.

Here's a selection of my favorite pieces from this past year. Enjoy catching up on any you might have missed or re-visiting any favorites that you thought were extra rad :)

And please feel free to share this round-up with any of your yogi friends whom you think might be interested – it's always good to spread the educational word about these myths!

My Favorite Content of 2020:

This was a huge survey & analysis that my collaborator Travis Pollen and I conducted, and the results were very eye-opening!

(This was obviously written before the pandemic, BTW. But it's certainly relevant for our future, post-pandemic yoga world!)

Raise your hand if you've been taught that flexing the foot in pigeon pose is important in order to protect the knee!

If your hand is up, you should probably watch (and share!) this YouTube video 😀

You know the alignment instruction to "shift forward onto the toes" in chaturanga? Is it important or necessary?

Check out my YouTube video on this topic to find out!

Busting the age-old myth in the yoga world that we shouldn't invert our bodies while menstruating.

This one is an Instagram post slideshow - check it out!

This may have been my most controversial yoga myth-busting video this whole year!

Watch this YouTube video for a science-based look at posture, pelvic tilt, and fearmongering.

Another favorite article written with Travis Pollen, PhD. We examined some common claims about end range strength training, active & passive range of motion, and injuries. A great piece for yoga/movement geeks!

I still receive questions about the supposedly injurious transition from "closed" to "open" hips every week!

More people need to watch this video - check it out if you missed it (and consider sharing it!)

This is a fantastic piece that just might change the way you approach the breath in yoga!

I'm honored that special guest Magnus Ringberg, physiotherapist and graduate student in sport science, wrote this article for my blog.

I was so excited to have special guest contributor Lauren Anderson write this piece for my blog!

Lauren is a yoga teacher and postnatal fitness specialist with a master's degree in exercise science.

This is an extra timely yoga myth to examine right now!

Let's consider ringing in the New Year without any problematic detox talk, shall we?

We've probably *all* said this before, but if we truly clarify our terms, we'll be tempted to retire this phrase.

Watch this YouTube video to find out why!

This is a huge resource of an article written by Dr. Chris Leib, physical therapist and strength coach, for my blog.

I hope you enjoyed this yoga myth-busting year-in-review! :)

And don't forget that aside from cultivating all of this in-depth free content for our yoga community, you can also find me teaching yoga classes in my online class library (140+ classes and growing every week) and movement science-based workshops for yoga geeks in the many courses on my website!

Also, I can't tell you too much about it yet (heh heh), but I'm incredibly excited to be working on a huge collaboration about Strength for Yoga with my friend Travis Pollen, PhD, that's slated to release in early 2021.

If you're a yogi who's interested in strength like Travis and I are, please sign up for our brand new email list to stay in the loop on this upcoming creation!

Thank you so much for being a part of this wonderful science-based, strength-based, myth-busting yoga community that we have on our hands. I'm looking forward to much more of all of this in 2021!

Happy New Year!
